This girl

is turning five. Or possibly twenty five.  She is like a typical summer day, she takes a little while to warm up, then you get  hours of hot, bright sunshine possibly topped by some electrical storms.

She loves swimming, singing loudly ( tunefully is an optional extra), carrying handbags full of treasures, writing me swathes of notes and drawing me countless pictures (of me or us together holding hands). She loves Peppa Pig (still), Ariel and foxes. She sleeps with three lambs - Lamby lamb, baby lamb and Hoppity (who has a bell). She loves having wrestles and doing acrobatics with her Dada. She is afraid of foxes, wolves, dogs and shadows on her bedroom wall. She does not like oats in her porridge, calls her elbows her heels and has only just stopped referring to Big Bad Woofs. She can be equal parts kind or torturously irritating to her big brother. She likes to go bare feet as much possible, does not like dresses with buttons or zips and hates having anything done with her hair so mostly it looks a little wild. ( these photos being taken the one and only day this year that was the exception).

When she grows up she wants to be a doctor- nurse-hairdresser. She wants to marry Tom but as he is already marrying Phoebe she could perhaps marry Ethan instead, or maybe me. Only Tom has the special blue light to make her rainbow shoes glow and he did promise to bring it to show and tell. Last week she pulled a tiny seed out of her multigrain sandwich and ran outside so she could plant a bread tree. She really wants Santa to bring her a rainbow unicorn light up pillow pet.

She is our best girl.

Last minute, life altering, epiphany, rainbow bunting

I had an epiphany of sorts this week. Actually three things all happened recently to give me a collective and massive mind shift. The first happened about six weeks ago when Roboboy who is now seven and a half told me he no longer needed me to read him a story at night. In one fell swoop he was done, with no warning. We were two chapters into Harry Potter when he said that I was just too slow and he  could read much faster himself, thank you very much. To my great surprise, I was not done, not prepared and not ready to give up this long held ritual of childhood.

Our house runs with a lot of ritual and sameness. For someone like me it is simultaneously both somewhat reassuring and incredibly stifling. There have been nights where I thought I may have still been reading books to this boy when he was twenty three. There have been nights where it was not exactly what I felt like doing at eight pm. I certainly never, ever thought about the day when it would stop. Just like that.

The second thing that happened was the final check up with the plastic surgeon who removed my melanoma. All is well with my scar. Then he wanted to check my groin, for lymph nodes. Gulp. Just to make sure I was not in that five percent, that small number where their melanoma would come back.

Mostly I have put that five percent out of my mind. Sometimes I think about that fact that is a one in twenty chance. If someone told my I had a one in twenty chance of winning a million dollars I would be a teeny bit excited. I would think that it was a real possibility, that I was in with a chance.
But I don't want to be in with a chance at all. So, I'm going to get on with it and put that tiny number out of my mind. But I'm going to make every day count, because you just never know what is around the corner.

The third thing was realising that my only other child, my youngest, my darling girl was turning five. Soon there will be no more kindy and she will be off to school. And then in no time at all she will turn around one day and say she doesn't need me to read to her in bed at night any more.

I have been wanting to cut up my vintage sheet stash for two years to make rainbow bunting. Until now, there had always been something else that I should be doing. But not this week. I had a sudden panic that if I did not make this bunting, right now, for this five year old party, that suddenly Liongirl would be fourteen and wanting a gothic themed event and my chance would be lost.

So like a woman possessed, I ignored the dishes and the laundry and the list of shoulds, and I chopped and ironed and stitched. So buzzed up that when I stepped on the pincushion in the above photo and  two large headed needles went into my foot, I just yanked them out and kept right on sewing. (note to self, do not keep needles in the pincushion, it is a health hazard).

So while the deck roof may be unpainted, we have fourteen metres of glorious rainbow vintage sheet bunting to distract us and remind me to snatch up every last golden childhood moment and savour it.

I never understood when older wiser people told me that these years with young children would be the best in my life.

When you are dealing with severe and chronic sleep deprivation, food allergies, sensory issues and countless other struggles you raise your eyebrows and think "Really?" and "Far out, are you telling me it gets harder than this"? But, like a sudden slap in the head it has hit me, that even with the hard stuff, these years are golden, and magical and precious and filled with unconditional love. So, I intend to soak up every last drop.

Back soon with an under the sea mermaid party and the favourite of all the cakes I have made. And may all mothers go forth and ignore the shoulds to craft memories for their children. Remember, the days are long, but the years are short.

* ( all is not lost, while the bedtime stories may be gone, my boy now just wants me to lie down for a chat and a snuggle instead).

He : helping me start the confounded piƱata from hell. He bowed out early on version one, I am still soldiering on after two collapses due to a slow balloon leak. And yes there is STILL a painting trestle in my lounge room.

She : did her whole ballet concert on the actual stage! (last year she did most of it behind the curtains in the wings). She concentrated hard throughout and we are eternally grateful for a costume that did not itch as the tutu did not touch  her legs. I am also incredibly proud that she let me do her hair in a bun for the first time. However, we will never again speak of the seams in the stockings.

Memories and Milestones

Oh, we have had a week full of goodness. Where on earth to start? Perhaps with the stash of vintage tablecloths waiting for me at the oppie when I took down four full bags of stuff. Some of which came from the contents of all these cardboard boxes which are finally all unpacked. Every last one. Legoman even sold the boxes, so this pile no longer resides in the house at all.

It was the week of the one and only end of year kindy concert. I think in many ways that precious kindy year is a magical, warm and fuzzy time that is never quite replicated later in life. And when it is the end of kindy year for your youngest child, well that is very, very special.

Oh, my beautiful birdy leaving your nest. Remember this year, it's one of the best.

We took the kids to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, their first exposure to a musical stage show. Liongirl was in heaven, even sitting in row Q did not dampen her enthusiasm.

As it was a week of memories and milestones, I had to include the first ever wearing of plaits in her hair. This is a very big deal at our place. Two words - sensory issues. If you do not know what that means be very, very grateful. If you do know, just nod and smile to yourself and share my joy of small moments.

And lets not forget this new essential kindy creation.

"It's a money machine Mama".
Oh, a cash register, how lovely.
"Noooo Mama, a MONEY machine"
Do you mean a machine that makes money? Oh yes, goodness it appears to have already produced $7.15!

That will come in very handy for a spot of Christmas shopping. Not for these though, as hopefully Santa will come through with a set of these for your bird mad brother. We are presuming that Everingham & Watson ship direct to the North Pole.

There are a few other things on the go around here. Namely this dubious attempt at a jellyfish. No clues here on the theme of the upcoming birthday party.

And this stool from the op shop which for ten dollars had enormous potential despite it's previous unfortunate makeover with gold stencilling, royal blue paint and thick drippy varnish.  What I thought at first glance were studs under the seat were actually thick drips of dried lacquer.  Talk about bodgy rushed makeover gone bad. Picture a colour change and some crochet love.

Oh yes, it was a great, wondrous week.

a portrait of my children, once a week, every week in 2013 via Che and Fidel

He : has been really testing the love this week. Despite looking like butter won't melt in his mouth, I have been fantasising about boarding school. Hoping it is just term four-itis and he comes good soon.

She : was an absolute delight to take along to her first show, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. We have been reading the story for months and she was beside herself with excitement and singing along with gusto.
