Daylight robbery

Things have taken a short pause around here but I wanted to make a quick update so you know what is going on. Our renovation has been delayed about a month by the incessant rain we experienced for most of February. At this stage we are looking to start in early May.

Two days ago we came home from work and discovered that we had been robbed.
The two laptops that contained every picture of our children for the last seven years were taken, and a string of pearls given  to me by my dad when I graduated from university. While Legoman did back our photos up to an external hard drive, it appears that the back up is incomplete. I have not fully investigated how many years of baby photos are gone yet as I need a bit of time to get my head around it first. For a prolific photo taker like me it is a sad, sad day.

However, there are several things to be grateful for. We are all ok, we are insured and how it heartened me to realize that nearly every important moment in my kid's lives  for the last two years has been kept safe on this little blog. I intend to make some time to print out more of my favourite photos and display them. Our wedding photos ( being pre digital era) are all safe. The policeman who came to fingerprint the house recently lost every image of his life for a decade, including all his wedding photos, when his external hard drive blew up.

So, I thought I would use our situation to remind you all to back up those irreplaceable photos of your children and let you know there are built in functions on iPhones, iPads and Apple laptops that once you have enabled them, will let you track where your device is. Thankfully, my camera was not stolen and as soon as I can borrow a computer from my mum, I have lots to share.

  3. So sorry. It's a bad world we live in sometimes. I'm mostly sorry for the lost of the photos. That would devastate me. You have a wonderfully upbeat way about you and you are right, the fact that you are okay and are insured is something to be grateful for. Hang in there.

    Hugs,
    Sharon

  4. So sorry to hear this news.
Fingers crossed that you find most of the baby photos lurking somewhere on the external hard drive.
Or better yet that the police manage to recover your things.

  12. Oh you poor thing. You're the second person today to tell me they were broken into. There's no excuse for that sort of behaviour. I hope they found prints. Bastards! You're a stronger woman than me, looking at the positives. Have you done a quick run 'round the local pawn shops? All these crims want is money so they'll be hocking your computers as soon as they can. Love to you. xo

  14. That's awful Mel, so sorry for you. Keep looking on the bright side. And yes, in this digital age it's nice to find other ways to back up and store your data. I lost my computer harddrive last year when it completely failed and lost most of my photos. Luckily I use Flickr to host all the pics I post to my blog, so I could download a lot all from there again. Still, sucks. x

  15. Sweetheart I'm so sorry, I hate the way people feel they have a right to enter our homes and take what they want!
This blog is indeed a wonderful record of your family life, another reason we should all have one! Thinking of you :) x

  16. Mel, I am so sorry to hear this. First us, now you. It feels so awful to think that somebody has been in your house, such a violation. Thank goodness you had insurance but the loss of all of that information must hurt. The pearl necklace too, that's old school thievery. Just nasty. I hope the police find whoever broke in to your home, sad to think that people can be so desperate/heartless/entitled.

  27. Oh that's awful news, I'm glad you can see the positives though.

Being a technophobe myself, my daughter saves my photos for me - I must get her to do it again this weekend, thanks for the reminder.
Is there some way of saving posts from our blogs in case anything goes wrong with blogger?

  28. How unsettling for you! The very reason I started my blog was to have a record in case something happened to our cyber stuff. It ended up being much more as the unpredictable events of the last year unfolded but I kind of love that that record is always there for the children and for us and there are all of you lovely blogettes out there too. Win-win! You are being admirably philosophical!

  29. How awful, but at least you're seeing the positive side and no one was hurt. I have virtually nothing backed up, I'm so computer illiterate but really should to take time to find out how.

  30. I just popped in to say that l am so sorry and will be thinking of you, how awful! The nerve of people! Pam x

  31. Oh Mel, I am so very sorry. How utterly rubbish. I really feel for you. But, like you say, you are all ok and insured so that's one thing to give you some comfort. Take care. xx

  32. Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear this Mel. It can so easily happen to anyone. I know I need to print up some photos. They just feel safer that way don't they, but I'm afraid it will take some time to catch up as there is so many. Hoping you can salvage as many as possible xo

  33. Gosh, I am really really sorry to hear about your robbery, how horrid but glad you are all ok. I feel like I need to go and clutch my external drive now too.
I feel for you having the delay on your renovations too. i hope things go better for you soon.

  34. So sorry Mel, an awful violation for your family. Especially sad about your sentimental pearls, hope the police recover them for you, it can happen.

  35. Oh that's awful - hope you manage to salvage a load of photos from your blog - makes you realise how useful a blog can be! We backed up all our photos to an external hard drive when we moved in case anything happened to our computer - and then had the hard drive stolen...

  36. Mel, that is truly poo. Thank GOODNESS for blogs, right. At least you've got 2 years of memories and that family and friends can fill in the rest from their albums

    `xx

  37. I am so sorry this happened to you. Hopefully the stolen articles can be recovered. Beyond things, it robs you of that feeling of safety in your own home. So glad you were not home at the time and that none of you was hurt.
I lost a couple of years worth of pictures in a computer crash once. :-( Luckily a few of the pics of my kids had been shared with family, and some were on other online photo albums, so we were able to reconstruct a few snippets from that period of time. But photos from two trips were gone, completely. But we have our memories.

  38. oh no, having lost all of our photos due to a hard drive problem followed by an agonising wait to work out what could be recovered I know how you feel. We ended up with about half back. I had made discs at one stage of all of N's baby photos but lost a lot of H's unfortunately. I now have two back up hard drives, one gets hidden in the roof under the batts when we go away. We have been broken into several times too. Thinking of you. xx
