Woolly walls, new old floors,vj sheets and colour debate - Reno Day 64

There have been some big and exciting changes for Betsy this week. For a start we have our first batch of vj sheeted walls and ceilings going up in the lounge room. And my first view outside with the bifold doors open. Hopefully this is how they will be much of the time when the weather starts to warm up.

The side lounge room wall is complete. While the ceiling has been lined with VJ (vertical join) mdf sheeting, the side wall (pine coloured section) has been completed in new tongue and groove timber boards.

Due to the thickness of the original boards, the sheeting did not match here and timber boards had to be used instead. These are made from smaller pine offcuts joined together but will look seamless when painted.

We also have lots of white woolly walls appearing as insulation goes in.

And the huge pile of reclaimed hoop pine flooring we had been carefully collecting and stashing over the last year, has been decimated as the floors have been completed in the lounge, kitchen and laundry.

At the moment they look like a real mish mash, but hopefully when they are sanded back, the true honey colour will appear.

We have some new deck handrails.

And I have been outside undercoating weatherboards and slapping on some sample pots of exterior paint. I think I have whittled it down to two contenders.

Of course, no one is in agreement over this either. Legoman and Roboboy like one of these and Feng Shui Nonna and I like the other. (Actually Feng Shui Nonna is not actually sure about the whole grey thing full stop but is still happy to provide an opinion).

It gets even more confusing when you put the same colour in a different spot and people then say they really, really don't like the colour they previously chose.

Anyway, since it's coming at me in all directions, feel free to share your opinions on this too. The lighter colour or the darker colour? Legoman wanted to canvas the builders via a poll and run with their  choice (obviously thinking that the boys would all stick together) but they have wisely chosen to stay out of it!

  2. It is all looking amazing. The biofold doors are fab! Bet you thank your lucky stars every day that you decided not to live amoungst the reno. Wise lady. No idea about the colour, I'm as blind as a bat so feel its best not to comment ;-) xo

    1. Yep, very relieved every single time I set a toenail over there, that we are not living amongst it. mel x

  3. Darker, and I'd be tempted to keep that timber off-cut wall as is - coated in Danish Oil or something. It would add some nice texture and warmth to the space (just saying Mel, none of my bees wax!)
Betsy's look very swish, looking out from those bifolds is going to be a dream come true for you guys.

p.s. btw, which colour do you like?

    1. Kylie, think your wall suggestion is very clever, would probably look great on a ceiling. The joins are a little tacky though as they as zig zag and about every 30 cm and I am a white lover so they will be going. Will share my colour choice next post but did not want to bias the response! mel x

  4. Hi, I'm new to your blog and catching up. The renovation is huge but it's going to be amazing. I can't get over the wall with the bifold doors, that is just spectacular.

  5. I love how open your space is...it is going to be so wonderful when it is finished!
I like the grey on the left...the more silvery one. We just painted (parts of) our house light silvery grey and I love it. I of course cannot remember what the exact colour was but it looks great next to the fresh white trim!

  7. Wow - lots of progress this week and it's looking very good. As for the colour (and keep in mind I'm no colour consultant), it's really hard to gauge this from a computer screen. Even the lighter of the two will appear "darker" next to the pure white undercoat. I imagine it will read lighter when the whole wall is painted. And keep in mind sunlight. The back of your house faces North, yes? This will make the colour appear lighter again. Hope that helps, but at least you've whittled it down to two. Worst case scenario you may have to flip a coin. xx

    1. Our deck faces mostly east and will get alot of direct sunlight early in the day. The colours change so much depending on where they are and how much light they receive and that is what is making it difficult. mel x

  8. They are both good colours. Just draw one out of a hat and if you really feel bad about the one that wins you know it should be the other! I can't believe you are so far along. Doing it in one hit is such a good idea. Remember its hot here most of the year so that might effect your colour choice too. Cooler colour perhaps?

  10. So much progress Mel! It's very exciting. How awesome is that big massive wall of bi-fold doors going to be. I think I like the darker grey in the last photo but is that the same colour as the one on the very left in the second last photo? Because I love that colour too. It will be fantabulous whatever you decide. Look forward to the next instalment. Mel x

  11. Just weighing in..., I would pick darker! I went lighter on our house because I was a bit scared and it is very light with the sun on it. I like it in the afternoon shade. I had the trims picked for ages and did a last minute switch on the main colour. Good luck!

  13. I'm afraid of colour, so I'd say go with Annie's idea. You can't go wrong really as they are both good. Loving all this progress. You'll be in your home in next to no time!! xx

  15. It's really coming together now - that huge wall with the bifold doors is amazing!! I am very jealous. Honestly, I think both shades of grey look good and there isn't a lot in it. Sorry, that's not very helpful is it... xx

  16. I'm still in awe of your bi-fold doors! It's nice to see the view from the inside out. Great to see some VJ walls up! Very clever to collect the flooring over the last year. We had difficulty sourcing it for our last reno. I think I prefer the lighter grey. Good luck with the final decision!

  17. That room is huge, how relaxing will it be in Summer with the bifolds open :-). I like the light grey with all your foliage, but the darker grey looks very classy too - no help whatsoever lol.
