School holiday snapshots

Betsy has an old fashioned wind up doorbell, with every wind it lets out a shrill tring tring tring, for as long as the children keep winding. And the children do so love to keep winding. The other morning, early, that tring tring tring dragged me away from the porridge. I was about to rouse, when I opened the door to discover miss Liongirl clutching this crepe myrtle branch in her grubby paws. For me, as a gift, the little monkey had scaled the tree herself to get it. She insisted on a vase and lucky I have so much milk glass lying around.

Now that I have actually crocheted something to completion, I feel completely justified in starting something new, a stripy cushion for the girl this time. Must say, I do feel like a lunatic sitting around doing this in the sweltering summer heat but it gives me something to do while I supervise the kids when they swim. Now just need to work out where I am going wrong on the ends when some rows are just a bit shorter than others.

This is what happens when very clever people crochet- an iced vovo replica. I found this recently at Handmade High Street, looking forward to wearing my iced vovo on my lapel when it cools down enough to wear something requiring a lapel. For anyone unfamiliar with an iced vovo, they have been around for decades and consist of biscuit, pink icing, strawberry jam and coconut.

And look what my mother in law turned up with. A replica of our burmese Bella. So that when Roboboy has a sleepover he can bring his cat with him for company. I think it is an uncanny resemblance. They are also the only ones in the house lucky enough to be getting holiday naps I might add.

Instead we have been doing pretty much daily bouts of hosing on the trampoline.

Visiting our neighbours for swims, we have open slather on their pool as most of their children are all grown up at uni, sometimes if we are lucky their nine year old is home to play.

When it's too hot and the sun burns in the middle of the day we crank up the aircon and fall back on our old faithful friend mobilo,

and dig out old games for another try.

Sometimes I go to the beauty parlour and get extreme makeovers involving yellow eyeshadow and multiple lip glosses. Roboboy made up a menu for me, so I can order from miss Liongirl's extensive range of options.

and later when it cools off, it's time for a ride. i.e. Roboboy and I ride while miss Liongirl sits in her chariot and stuffs herself with snacks. Ah school holidays, we love you and we also just a little bit love that there is only a week to go.

  1. Beautiful photos, enjoy the sunny weather, it's snowing hard here in the uk today. I have the same crochet problems as you and I can't find the answer anywhere. If and when I do, I'll pop back and tell you!

  2. Maaaaate, the extreme makeover sounds fabulous, only thing that was missing from your post was a pic of you emerging from the salon, all aglow...

  4. So much happy stuff here! It reminds me of similar posts I wrote during our loooong summer holiday (except we had a lot less sun). How nice that your neighbours let you use their pool. Thanks to this post, and your other, I am now looking on ebay for milk glass. I think it may be my new obsession.

  8. Hasn't the pool come in handy this Summer - we have been swimming almost every day during the holidays too. I adore you bike; hopefully it's nice and flat where you live to make pulling the Chariot around. Oh, and I must thank you for the tip-off - I went and bought a pair of red Saltwaters just the other day. They are soooo comfy. xx

  11. I have kept very similar beauty parlour 'menus' from my girls when they were little Mel, and they still like to give me make-overs now.
I love your red bike and 'matching' sandals (and those triangular 'bits' on the front of Betsy) x

  13. I love your beauty parlor list of services!
    Does she take bookings?

I think wives of teachers often have the same mixed feeling about the end of school holidays...I know I do!

  15. Looks like you are having great holidays! Lovely photo of you and the kids heading out on your bikes. I think we have the same kind of doorbell, but ours in on the back door! When we renovated thirteen years ago we recycled my Nanna's front door to be our back door, since it matched the bungalow doors in our house. (it was only later that my dad explained the slight dent in the door, where a thief had jemmied the door and broken in ...). So the only time we hear our doorbell is on the rare occasion that one of us gets accidentally locked out in the backyard. But yes, is a shrill trilling sound! Love your milkglass.

  16. I have a similar bike trailer and liken it to a chariot as well, imagining my two year old sitting in there with a whip, spurring me on! Lovely stripes too, for the girls' cushion - very pretty!

  19. Aw look at her peeking out of her chariot there - too cute! Love that family shot. I'm not 100% sure but is there something about adding a stitch to the end of each row of crochet before you turn when you are working flat like this? Annie would know. Love the iced vovo AND the cat is awesome. We still have 2 more weeks left down here of the longest summer holiday on record and I am also a little bit excited about the return of school. Mel xx

  21. Mobilo has to be a top toy! Wasn't until I had the 3rd by that I caved in (yikes the cost!) and it has been well and truly good money spent!
2 weeks of hols left for one child ; 2 were lucky and started yesterday! Tonsils out for me tomorrow so instead of me starting at my school next week, it is another 2-3 weeks off! I was ready to go back too...

  22. I had to laugh at the iced vovo replica. We don't have them over here and when I read that, something entirely different sprang to mind - it's a good job you put the photo of the biscuit by the side. I sniggered at you looking forward to wearing your iced vovo on your lapel!

(in case you're wondering what I was thinking , it was vulva).

  23. I had to have a little chuckle at your "makeover". I love how your crochet is coming along. Looks like the very blue I was using for Violet's like sleeves. Stay cool in this weather :)
